Hi, sorry but I know only some words of German.

I have discovered on Wikipedia a project of a new railway line in Austria, including one 32 km long tunnel:

http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Koralmbahn

Is this tunnel under construction? Using Altavista Babelfish, I have understood something:

Principal item of the Koralmbahn is the Koralmtunnel, which accomplishes under the Koralpe, and also the railroad line the name gave. In the year 2008 both on Kaerntner and on steirischer page sounding out lugs are pushed forward, which are to be extended starting from 2008 to the first tube tunnels. The Koralmtunnel is to be first single-lane finished placed up to the year 2016. The stages Graz Deutschlandsberg and complaint ford wolf mountain already 2010. The estimated total costs of the Koralmbahn amount to 4.2 billion?.

But somewhere I think I have read this project has been stopped. Do you know anything more?

Hi,

unfortunately the koralm-project is a highly politically disputed one. It is strongly forced by members of one political party (the blue freedom-party) , officially declared as a great benefit for carinthia. If political situation changes, it can very likely come to a halt due to the commercial low priority of the line. Others have much better cost-benefit ratio.
For the tunnel itself only exploration works have started, but no digging of the main hole.

Thank you, is it the existing diesel line between Klangenfurt and Bleiburg being double tracked and electrified, or a new one?

The Brenner? The line Innsbruck-Wörgl-Küfstein is under construction, and some exploration tunnels are under construction. There is in Austria some political pressions to build it?

The Koralm line cannot be used also by freight trains, via Tarvisio and Jesenice? The Italian line from Tarvisio has been rebuilt, but there are some polemic because it is under-utilized.

What would be the time gained passing by Kthe Koralm line instead via St veit/Unzmarkt, for passengers travelling from Kagenfurt to Wien?

The existing diesel line between Klagenfurt and Bleiburg is being double tracked and electrified from Klagenfurt to Km 110.7. From there onwards a completely new line will be built which by-passes Bleiburg.
